Rwandan President Paul Kagame was sworn in for a fourth term on Sunday after winning the July 15 election with over 99% of the vote. The inauguration ceremony was attended by dozens of heads of state and other dignitaries from across Africa.



Kagame, who has ruled Rwanda since the 1994 genocide, took the oath of office before the Chief Justice, pledging to &#8220;preserve peace and national sovereignty, consolidate national unity.&#8221; The outcome of the election was never in doubt, as Kagame&#8217;s overwhelming victory underscored the lack of democratic opposition in the country.



Only two candidates were authorized to run against Kagame out of the eight applicants, with several prominent Kagame critics barred from participating. The Democratic Green Party leader, Frank Habineza, came in second with 0.5% of the votes, while independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana received 0.32%.



Rights activists have criticized Kagame&#8217;s fourth term, describing it as a stark reminder of the limited democracy in Rwanda. Kagame has been praised for his role in stabilizing the country in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, but his administration has also been criticized for cracking down on dissent and restricting political freedoms.



The inauguration ceremony, held at a packed 45,000-seat stadium in the capital Kigali, saw crowds gathering early in the morning to witness the event. The event was attended by several dozen heads of state and other dignitaries from across Africa, underscoring the regional influence and power of Kagame&#8217;s government.



Despite the concerns raised by rights groups, Kagame&#8217;s supporters argue that his continued leadership has been crucial for Rwanda&#8217;s stability and economic development. The president has vowed to continue his efforts to consolidate national unity and preserve the country&#8217;s sovereignty in the years to come.
