Two prominent broadcast journalists, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Kwame Appiah Kubi, made headlines during their recent visit to Asankragua in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region. 



While on official duties, they arrested three Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, along the Tano River, one of Ghana&#8217;s largest rivers.



Okatakyie expressed deep concern about the environmental damage caused by these illegal operations, noting that the quality of River Tano has significantly deteriorated. 



He pointed out that despite the ongoing rainy season, the river has not experienced the usual increase in water volume, attributing this decline to galamsey activities.



In a video from the encounter, the journalists confronted the Chinese nationals and local Ghanaians at the mining site, questioning whether they had the necessary permits to operate.



 “Per the law, we can arrest you,” Okatakyie was heard telling the Chinese miners. Tensions escalated as one of the Chinese nationals resisted, prompting Okatakyie to express his frustration, asking, “Can we go to China and fool like this?”



Following the confrontation, the journalists took the Chinese nationals to the Tano River to witness firsthand the adverse effects of their activities on the environment.



 They later handed the individuals over to the police for further action.This incident was highlighted during a press briefing by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who raised alarms about the increasing involvement of foreigners in illegal mining alongside their Ghanaian collaborators.



 The journalists&#8217; actions have sparked discussions about the ongoing challenges posed by galamsey in Ghana and the need for stricter enforcement of mining regulations to protect the country&#8217;s natural resources.
