Flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced plans to tackle the illegal mining crisis, known as ‘galamsey,’ by using the Ghana Card to track individuals involved in such activities. 



Speaking during a campaign tour in the Kpone Katamanso constituency of the Greater Accra Region, He emphasized the need to regulate and sanitize small-scale mining operations across the country.



In his address, the NPP’s 2024 Flagbearer outlined a preventive approach aimed at empowering the Geological Survey Authority to conduct mineral prospecting and establish community mining schemes. 



He stressed the importance of having accurate data to direct mining efforts, stating, “I want us to set up community mining schemes with certainty from the Geological Survey Department that here you have gold in that place. We can ensure that where they are mining has gold.”



He pointed out that without proper regulation, illegal miners will continue to operate in secrecy, exacerbating environmental degradation.



 “If you don’t regulate them, they will hide and do it. We need to enforce the laws and direct so that we can monitor what they are doing,” he explained.



Bawumia further elaborated on the role of the Ghana Card, saying that it would be used to monitor miners and provide them with necessary facilities. “Once they know that they can get gold in a certain area, they will come with their Ghana Cards. We will monitor you and provide you with user facilities, eliminating the need to go elsewhere and destroy the environment,” he noted.



Bawumia criticized the current state of small-scale mining, highlighting that many operators engage in &#8220;trial and error&#8221; digging, which leads to environmental harm.



 “People are doing trial and error, destroying the environment wherever they go. They just dig; if they don’t find anything, they move to the next place,” he said.



The Galamsey Menace has been a long standing concern in Ghana with many citizens and organizations call for a more aggressive and stronger approach to curb the environmental crisis.
