The Kontinhene of Asuom, Nana Boadi Ampomenim Abodade III, has issued a poignant call to President Akufo-Addo, urging him to take decisive action against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, before his term concludes.



In an interview with Channel One News, Nana Abodade III expressed profound frustration over the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities in the Asuom community. 



He criticized the rampant violation of mining regulations, highlighting that some individuals misuse prospecting licenses and operate without proper contracts, resulting in significant damage to local lands.



Nana Abodade III specifically named AC Zenon, a company allegedly associated with Amina Tahiru and Lands and Natural Resources Minister Abu Jinapor, as noncompliant with community demands to cease operations and restore damaged areas. He emphasized that the government must take immediate steps to address these issues.



“This is a critical moment for President Akufo-Addo to leave a meaningful legacy by tackling the galamsey crisis,” he stated. He reminded the President of his previous commitments to combat illegal mining and urged swift action within the next two months.



The traditional leader proposed that the government convene a meeting with key stakeholders to reassess the mining sector, aiming to develop sustainable solutions that protect the environment and promote responsible mining practices.



“People with prospecting licenses are exploiting them, while others operate without any contracts, causing widespread destruction,” he lamented. “It’s a huge battle for this country because AC Zenon, linked to Amina Tahiru, seems to operate with impunity.”



Nana Abodade III revealed that the youth of Asuom have demanded that mining operations be halted and that the environment be restored. 



While many complied, he noted that Amina Tahiru has refused, reportedly employing military personnel to protect her operations.



“Mr. President, you are our uncle and brother; there are only a few months left in your term, but I believe you can still make a difference,” he said. “Your legacy will be measured by your actions regarding galamsey, and posterity will not forgive you if you do not act now.”



He emphasized that positive results were seen when a ban on illegal mining was previously enforced, urging the President to reinstate the ban and gather stakeholders to find effective solutions to the ongoing crisis.
