Google has rolled out voice support for Twi, marking a significant breakthrough in digital accessibility for millions of Ghanaian speakers. 



The integration, announced today, enables Twi speakers to use voice commands for Google Search, Gboard typing, and Google Translate.



The development, spearheaded by Google&#8217;s AI Research Center in Accra, is part of a broader initiative that introduces voice support for 15 African languages, potentially impacting over 300 million users across the continent.



&#8220;The digital decade belongs to Africa,&#8221; said Matt Brittin, Google&#8217;s President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. &#8220;This expansion represents a crucial milestone in making technology more accessible to African users.&#8221;



The update includes other West African languages such as Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin, reflecting Google&#8217;s commitment to linguistic diversity in the region. 



Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa, emphasized that the technology is &#8220;built by Africans for Africans and the world.&#8221;



The new feature allows Twi speakers to perform voice searches on Google, use talk-to-type functionality on Gboard and also input voice commands for Google Translate.



This development joins recent additions of other African languages including Chichewa, Somali, Shona, and Tswana to Google&#8217;s voice services platform. 



For Ghana&#8217;s tech community, this integration represents a significant step toward bridging the digital divide and preserving local language usage in the digital age.
