Member of Parliament for Odododiodio Constituency, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has pledged to overhaul Ghana’s sports sector if he is appointed Youth and Sports Minister in the upcoming John Mahama administration. 



Vanderpuye, who previously served as Sports Minister in 2016, expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of Ghanaian sports and vowed to take decisive action to tackle its challenges.



In an interview with Joy Sports, Vanderpuye stated, “If I become the Minister of Sports in 2025, I will sanitize the sports sector once again. I am not happy with the things going on. I am not happy.”



Criticizing the influence of individuals who exploit the sport for personal gain, Vanderpuye highlighted the detrimental effects on players and investors. 



“There are a lot of things going on in our football that require bold steps to sanitize the system,” he remarked. 







“Football should benefit those who play it and invest in it, not businessmen and opportunists who treat footballers like poultry chickens, using them whenever they desire for their own gain.”



Vanderpuye aims to create an environment conducive to the growth and integrity of sports, ensuring that athletes and genuine stakeholders can thrive. 



As a former footballer, he emphasized his commitment to protecting athletes from exploitation, asserting, “I will fight against anyone who desires to exploit any sportsman.”



The current Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has faced criticism regarding the declining performance of Ghanaian sports under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. 



The national football team, the Black Stars, has struggled in recent years, failing to advance beyond the group stage of any international tournament since their Round of 16 finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.



Vanderpuye’s vision for Ghanaian sports focuses on restoring its former glory through comprehensive reforms, addressing exploitation, and fostering a thriving environment for athletes and stakeholders alike.
