Kwasi Kwarteng, the immediate past spokesperson for the Education Ministry, has asserted that the outgoing Akufo-Addo administration allocated sufficient funds for food supplies in Senior High Schools (SHSs) before the end of its tenure.



In an interview with Adom FM, Kwarteng revealed that GH₵150 million was released last week for food supply, with GH₵100 million earmarked for suppliers and GH₵50 million designated for headteachers to purchase perishables. 







Although he did not specify the exact date of the disbursement, he emphasized its timeliness.



Kwarteng&#8217;s comments come in response to a recent appeal from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS), which urged parents and guardians to assist with feeding challenges faced by students. 



CHASS Secretary Primus Baro reported that some schools are rationing food, especially in northern Ghana, where supplies are reportedly scarce.







 He noted that in regions like Upper West, Upper East, and Northern Ghana, schools are struggling with a complete lack of oil, relying solely on rice and gari.



However, Kwarteng disputed claims of a food shortage, suggesting that the directive for students to bring food might be a precautionary measure rather than an indication of a widespread crisis. 



He asserted that the situation was not a result of financial shortfalls from the government but rather due to suppliers&#8217; hesitance linked to uncertainties about future payments from the incoming administration.



“When the new government has continuously indicated plans to allow headmasters to buy their own food, it will spark fear and panic among the suppliers,” Kwarteng explained. 



“There could be a problem, but nobody should paint the picture that the previous government left a bad situation to create disaffection. It is nowhere admitted that there was no food; the schools had food.”
