 The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced its readiness to participate in the upcoming National Education Forum, with a focus on addressing critical funding shortfalls within the country&#8217;s educational system. 



This announcement follows President John Dramani Mahama&#8217;s establishment of an eight-member committee tasked with organizing the forum to foster public dialogue on improving education in Ghana.



In an interview with Accra-based Channel One, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah highlighted several pressing concerns, including significant debts owed to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), challenges in financing the School Feeding Programme for basic schools, and the outstanding capitation grant, which has been in arrears for over two years.



Musah stated, “The major problem facing us is funding. All the problems we are going to discuss revolve around securing financial resources to address them. We owe WAEC over GH¢100 million and are struggling to finance the school feeding program. How can we feed students GH¢1.30 a day?”



He also expressed concern about the rising incidences of student indiscipline observed in some Senior High Schools, calling for urgent reforms in the disciplinary system. 



“We have lost the effective aspect of training our children concerning character and conscience. We will run into danger if we train children with knowledge but neglect their character development,” he emphasized.



Musah urged stakeholders to revisit the current system that restricts headmasters&#8217; authority, warning that failure to do so could lead to significant challenges in the future.
