<p>The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a strict directive prohibiting banks from photocopying Ghana Cards for customer verification in banking transactions. <br></p>



<p>This move emphasizes that biometric verification must be the standard for identity authentication, aligning with the National Identity Register Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2111).</p>



<p>Mr. Ashitei Trebi-Ollennu, Deputy Head of the Financial Integrity Office at BoG, stated, “We have never said that banks should photocopy Ghana Cards. Photocopying leaves room for fraud and compromises the integrity of transactions.”</p>

<p> He underscored the importance of using the biometric verification system linked to the National Identification database to ensure a secure financial ecosystem.</p>



<p>The directive was reinforced during a stakeholder engagement in Accra, organized by Identity Management Systems II (IMS II) Ltd. in collaboration with the National Identification Authority (NIA). <br></p>



<p>The event, themed “Protect Every Transaction with Biometric Verification,” gathered representatives from the BoG, the Ghana Association of Banks, the NIA, and all 25 universal banks in Ghana to discuss the critical role of identity verification in securing financial transactions.</p>

<p>James Cantamantu-Koomson, Executive Director of IMS II Ltd, highlighted the fundamental shift towards biometric identity management, stating, “Identity is at the center and the engine of our financial system. The database that the National Identification Authority has gathered is one of the most powerful assets we have as a country.”</p>

<p>The engagement fostered productive dialogue among stakeholders, allowing banks to provide feedback on improving verification processes. <br></p>



<p>Teresa Eson-Benjamin, Head of the Legal Directorate at the NIA, reiterated the legal mandate that establishes the Ghana Card as the sole form of identification for banking transactions.</p>

<p>Discussions during the event emphasized that biometric verification is the most secure form of authentication, effectively eliminating the fraudulent activities associated with photocopied Ghana Cards. <br></p>



<p>The call for a full transition to biometric-based verification aims to ensure that Ghana’s financial sector remains robust and aligned with international best practices.</p>

<p>The consensus reached at the engagement was clear: “Trust but verify” must guide Ghana’s financial sector. <br></p>
