Ghanaian journalist and former Media General employee Sandra Esinam Afenu has responded to personal attacks from Onua TV’s Captain Smart, calling his remarks unprofessional and a sign of insecurity.



In an open letter titled “An Opened Letter to Captain Smart of Onua TV,” Sandra criticized Captain Smart’s decision to launch personal insults instead of addressing her concerns about the declining standards of Media General.



“Normally, I do not engage with individuals who make unsubstantiated accusations or personal attacks. However, after careful consideration, I feel compelled to respond in this instance. Instead of addressing the issue at hand, he chose to launch a personal attack on my character,” she wrote.



The controversy began after Sandra called out a segment where Captain Smart encouraged youth in Obuasi to engage in illegal mining. Rather than responding to her critique, he retaliated with false claims about her career and personal life.



Sandra described his behavior as “appalling, backward, and primitive,” arguing that men who feel intellectually challenged often resort to labeling women as promiscuous.



“Your insults show a very low level of confidence. Your behavior is appalling and backward. Instead of engaging in intellectual discourse, you chose to attack my person. That is a reflection of your own insecurity,” she added.



She also urged the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the National Media Commission to address rising unprofessionalism in the media.



“As journalists, our role is to educate, inform, and hold individuals and institutions accountable, not to engage in personal vendettas or warfare. It is unfortunate that Captain Smart’s actions are bringing our noble profession into disrepute,” she stated.
