Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, is contesting an $18 million defamation ruling issued against him by a U.S. court in favor of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.



Agyapong’s legal team has filed a motion in the Superior Court of New Jersey, arguing that the damages awarded are excessive and should be reconsidered. 



They maintain that while jury decisions are respected, courts have the authority to modify verdicts if they are deemed disproportionate.



The lawsuit originated from Agyapong’s public accusations against Anas, which led to a legal battle culminating in the hefty judgment.



 However, Agyapong’s lawyers insist that the damages should be reassessed to ensure a fair outcome.



Meanwhile, Anas has spoken out about his legal victory, describing it as a strong statement against misinformation and character assassination.



“This decision is not merely a legal triumph—it is a resounding affirmation that falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society,” Anas stated.



Reflecting on his previous legal battle in Ghana, where he lost a similar case in 2018, Anas emphasized that justice was served in the U.S.



“Despite Mr. Agyapong’s own admission of lacking evidence, Justice Eric Baah denied me justice and even portrayed me—the plaintiff—as a criminal,” he recalled.



Anas credited the U.S. legal system for upholding fairness, highlighting that Agyapong presented the same ‘Who Watches the Watchman’ evidence from his Ghana case but still lost unanimously in the U.S.



“This outcome proves that the truth prevails and that accountability must extend to everyone, regardless of their position or influence,” he asserted.



He also issued a strong warning to politicians, emphasizing the role of the media in holding power to account. “You cannot take the media for granted. The press plays an indispensable role in scrutinizing leadership,” he said.
