The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticized the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for its attempted arrest of Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, describing the operation as unlawful and politically motivated.



Speaking on the incident, Afenyo-Markin detailed how armed operatives stormed Kumi’s constituency on March 7, 2025, in a bid to arrest him over a contempt charge linked to his swearing-in, despite a Supreme Court order freezing the enforcement of the High Court ruling.



According to him, the operatives, who arrived in pickup vehicles, harassed the MP, pulled a gun on him, and attempted to force him into their vehicle. However, the intervention of Kumi’s constituents prevented the arrest from being carried out.



“State security operatives were harassing the Member of Parliament in his constituency, but for the intervention of his constituents. They were armed with pickup vehicles. They actually pulled weapons on the MP, trying to threaten him to force him into the pickup,” Afenyo-Markin stated.



He questioned the legality of the NIB’s involvement, arguing that court orders should be enforced by a court bailiff, not the intelligence agency.







 He also accused the government of colluding with the Koforidua High Court to bend the country’s laws for political gain.



Afenyo-Markin hinted that the Minority Caucus would take further action, including summoning the Attorney General to provide answers regarding the incident.
