Former Dome Kwabenya MP and Minister for Gender, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has finally revealed why she left Ghana to the United States for months.



Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Adwoa Safo revealed that her eldest son had fallen gravely ill in the United States, forcing her to travel urgently to care for him. 



She described the situation as life-threatening, stating that her child was on his deathbed, leaving her with no choice but to be by his side.



At the time of her departure, Safo was serving as Minister for Gender and a sitting Member of Parliament. 



However, her absence led to internal party dissatisfaction, with some colleagues accusing her of neglecting her duties.



She defended her decision, explaining that child protection laws in the U.S. are strict, and had she failed to take care of her sick son, she risked losing custody of him to state authorities.



&#8220;I had to jet to the States to help care for my sick child because unlike Ghana, there are strict laws protecting children. If I failed to take care of him, I could risk the state taking my own child from me,&#8221; she explained.



Expressing her disappointment, Safo revealed that top members of her party were fully aware of her circumstances, yet she still faced public attacks from within her own ranks.



&#8220;Everyone above me in the party knew about the situation. It was highly disappointing when my own party members attacked me, called me all sorts of names, and claimed I had abandoned the party,&#8221; she lamented.



Adwoa Safo’s revelation comes after years of speculation surrounding her absence, which ultimately contributed to her political fallout.
